Initiated in 2018, the refurbishment of this 10,000 m² university building dating from the 1970s demonstrates the potential of existing buildings to meet the evolving needs of higher education.
Carried out in an occupied building, the project maintained teaching, research and office activities throughout construction through a complex phasing strategy across six levels. Beyond upgrading accessibility, fire safety and technical systems, the project positions refurbishment as a credible alternative to demolition and reconstruction, highlighting the environmental, economic and architectural benefits of transforming existing university assets.
The programme evolved throughout the design and construction phases to respond to users’ needs, growing student numbers and the lessons of the health crisis. This adaptability enabled more flexible, open and collaborative learning environments.
Based on a “value what already exists” approach, the project exposes the building’s structures and services, turning its existing fabric into an architectural resource. Combined with the use of natural materials, this strategy renews the building’s identity while encouraging appropriation by its users.
Delivered in close collaboration with the client, the project achieved a construction cost of €1,350/m² GFA, demonstrating that ambitious refurbishment can combine quality materials, environmental restraint and cost efficiency.
